With the rapid development of economy and the increasing growth of population，the negative effects on environment caused by environmental pollution and ecocide through human behaviour have been got more and more attention. A new branch of geotechnical engineering -- environmental geotechnology emerges as the times require in the field of science. It is not only a applied science but also a sociology，and combines technology with economy、politics、culture closely. Such problems as desertification、soil erosion、debris flow、landslide、garbage disposal、changes in ecological and geological environment、dispose of  radioactive nuke rubbish、protection of famous historic and cultural sites are researched in this field.

Since 1994, the research in environmental geotechnology field has been carried out in Geotechnology Institute of Southeast University. Such mainly studys as the effect on surroundings during driving piles and diging deep foundation pit are launched. Now, a  major project for Ministry of Education — developmental application and environmental effect of underground municipal spaces is being explored here.  In the meantime, monitoring technique on polluted sites and theory andapplication about handling means of polluted soil are also being probed. some achievements in scientific research have been printed in learning material for relative doctors and masters here to learn better.
