The project was authorized by Transport Bureau of Jiangsu Province in March, 2000 aiming at solving the deficiency in land and environmental pollution for the disposal of waste coal gangue. The project is on the characteristics of coal gangue in Xuzhou area, including chemical and mineral composition, physical characteristics, behavior of strength, compaction and permeability, the stability when watered, response under dynamic loads, constitutive model, and the criteria in embankment construction. Field experiments of the coal gangue as filling materials of embankment were also carried out at Jingfu national expressway. The special design method of embankment filled with coal gangue was proposed, and the construction technique was suggested. Meanwhile the method and criteria of quality control and inspection was also established. The economic benefit of the project attained 120 million RMB.
