Discipline Geotechnical Engineering

Brief Introduction of Discipline (within 400 words)

Geotechnical Engineering is a second-class discipline of Civil Engineering, under the leadership of Professor Songyu Liu. It has enrolled and nurtured the graduate students to award the master degree and doctorate degree since 1981 and 2000 separately. At that time, the famous expert of geotechnical engineering Professor Nianci Tang dedicated all his life to lay a solid foundation for the potential development of doctoral program. Afterward in 2007, geotechnical engineering had been included in the Jiangsu provincial key disciplines. Following with the development of national infrastructures, the discipline has formed its distinct research field and made a great achievement in pile dynamics, special ground improvement and assessment, offshore geotechnical engineering, geoenvironmental geotechnology, and surveying of underground structure field etc. Nine projects have been awarded the Advancement Prize of Science and Technology by the various ministries and provincial governments. Now, the discipline is well equipped with all types of laboratory facilities as GDS triaxial unsaturated soil testing system, GDS cyclic and static triaxial soil testing system, triaxial rheometer, high-precision mercury porosimeter, laser particle analyzer, large scale modeling system and other ordinary test apparatus, which could provide technical support for geotechnical testing related to teaching and research. Recently, the discipline is undertaking a number of import projects including innovative technology for ground improvement, mechanics of special soils, contaminated soils remediation, in-situ measurements etc. sponsored by Nation Science Foundation or National 863 Program. Meanwhile, other projects on highway and water conservancy, large-scale bridge pile foundation engineering, and underground structure are also undertaking. The annual research funds is over 10 million, and more than 60 papers are published on SCI, EI, ISTP and core journals per year on average.

 

Training Objectives (about 150 words, the following content is for reference only)

The students will be trained as high quality professionals in geotechnical engineering to feed the needs of univerties, research centers, and companies. The students will build a solid, broad, and theoretical foundation in Civil Engineering, have systematic and in-depth expertise in Geotechnical Engineering, grasp the frontal information of theoretical and technological development in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, and have the ability of conducting scientific research and solving the technical problems independently in the areas of geotechnical engineering, geoenvironmental engineering and underground engineering.  

The graduated students should be proficient in at least one foreign language.

 

Research Direction

1. Innovative technology of pile engineering; 2. Innovative ground improvement technology; 3. Environmental geotechnical engineering; 4. Underground engineering

 

Training Period

Generally, the students are expected to graduate in 3 or 4 years, longest may delay for 6 years.

Dissertation

Literature Reading (for reference only, the same below )

Students are required to read at least 50 literatures on topics related to their dissertation and research direction including more than 25 literatures in foreign languages. These literatures should be published within five years. Based on the literature studies, student is required to write a literature overview report and submitted to their supervisors.

 

Dissertation Writing

In addition to compliance with the provisions of school, dissertation must be written in a systematic and complete manner, presenting clear concepts, correct argument, realistic description, concise writing structure, smooth and concise writing style, correct calculation, reliable data, and clear icons.

 

Dissertation Evaluation

The dissertation should have certain depth and breadth. The following requirements should be achieved: have obvious innovation, reach the international advanced level in some part of the content, and have certain coverage. The findings presented in the dissertation should show the recent discovery, the new opinion, and certain guiding sense to this discipline's academic development. Students are required to conduct at least 2 years research and to publish at least 3 papers in the area of their disciplines before being eligible for applying for a Doctor's degree. At least one of the published papers should be indexed by Engineering Index (EI).

Discipline  Development Lecture

Students of Arts, Management Science, and Medicine must attend at least 5 public lectures held by graduate school. Students of Science and Engineering must attend at least 3 discipline development lectures.

Academic Seminar & Academic Meeting

Students must participate in at least 8 academic Seminars and give at least 4 academic reports, one of which is required to write in a foreign language. Students must participate in at least 2 important academic meetings in the area of their disciplines and give oral presentation.
