报告题目:Stabilization of Road Surface Soil Material Using Aqueous Polymers

    

Abstract:

Emission of dust from exposed ground surfaces is aided by low liquid retention capacity and constitutes a significant ecological and human health challenge worldwide. Global climate change is intensifying this problem through occurrence of drought conditions in many regions. Desiccation rate of soils can be reduced through amendment with aqueous polymers such that polymer molecules bind soil constituents and increase the viscosity of soil pore solution to improve the overall liquid retention. In this lecture, an investigation of the synthesis and potential use of aqueous polymers exemplified by cassava starch, to improve the liquid retention rate of a lateritic soil will be presented.

 Background of the speaker:

Professor Inyang holds a Ph.D. with a double major in Geotechnical Engineering and Materials, and a minor in Mineral Resources from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa; an M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering from North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota; and a B.Sc. (Honors) in Geology from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Prof. Hilary I. Inyang is a world-renowned researcher, expeditionist and educator in the areas of environmental science and engineering, energy systems and international development. He is a member of the Education Caucus of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and served for two terms (1997-2001) as Chair of the Science Advisory Board (Environmental Engineering Committee) of USEPA in Washington DC.

His research and professional focus are on contaminant leaching and dusting from materials, containment systems and materials for barriers, energy systems and geohazards. He has authored/co-authored more than 260 research articles, book chapters, federal design manuals and the textbook, Geoenvironmental Engineering: principles and applications, published by Marcel Dekker (ISBN: 0-8247-0045-7). He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Energy Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and has served on 29 journal editorial boards. He has won more than 20 professional prizes and is a former AAAS/USEPA Environmental Science and Engineering Fellow. He won the 2013 Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) in science and technology and he is a Fellow of both the African Academy of Sciences and the Geological Society of London
